I hold a Ph.D. from Stellenbosch University, and have considerable teaching experience, particularly in the field of Visual Studies, which developed from traditional Art History and invites collaboration with disciplines as diverse as Anthropology, Cultural Studies, and Settler Colonial Studies. I also have a strong publishing record, which shows a continuing interest in the powerful tenets that exist between narratives of the past and the construction of human identity, whether in terms of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Currently, I am historicising a number of monographs of homoerotic male nudes produced and published in South Africa between 1981 and 1991. The project involves considerable archival research into the circulation of homoerotic images under apartheid, but I anticipate that oral histories and extant ephemera obtained from the publisher (whom I am in contact with) will prove indispensable to the study.
