Siyabonga MAKHAYE is a black male South African with twenty five years’ work experience in the occupational safety, health, environmental and quality (SHEQ) risk management fields. Over the last decade or so SIYA has been involved in enterprise risk management in conjunction with internal and external auditing partners. He has worked in the heavy engineering industry ranging from mines, platinum & ferro-manganese smelters to steel fabrication, construction and manufacturing. Siya's most recent role was working as an EHS Risk Management Director for the Alstom Gibela Rail Consortium, this involved safe construction of the facility in compliance with environmental authorisations, commissioning it and finally operating the site to manufacture state of the art trains for PRASA. Working as a SHEQ Manager his responsibilities also included sustainability management and SHEQ reporting to France. He is currently running his own independent consulting in SHEQ and Sustainability and has had clients in RSA and Namibia.   He has successfully developed and implemented SHEQ management systems that received certification in accordance with the ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 29001 and ISO 9001 Standards. He also worked in cross-functional teams applied ISO 31000 risk standard, corporate governance principles in particular King IV. During his work experience Siya has also been able to effectively develop and implement SHE Business Plans and strategies for operations to pro-actively manage SHEQ risk compliance through integrated policies, budgets, programmes and initiatives.  Siya has experience in dealing with regulators at all three levels of government as well as other stakeholders ranging from organised labour, industry associations and general public who have interests and/or affected by operations.   Siya’s experience and competency in conducting internal SHEQ Audit provide a sound platform for him to conduct compliance audits in diverse industries within SADC as well as in Brazil, France, Namibia, Mozambique and Qatar. Part of his experience also includes participating in corporate Board meetings and subcommittees involving independent non-executive directors and interacting with auditors for the purpose of issuing an assurance statement for the companies he worked for.   He has obtained various qualifications in SHEQ ranging from a BSc Hon (Environmental Management), a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, certificated courses in Corporate Governance, Ethics & Compliance, Internal Auditing, Occupational Safety & Health Risk Legal Compliance. Siya is registered with SAIOH (auditing), IAIAsa (environmental impact assessor), SACPCMP (construction health & safety) and the IODsa (Non-executive Directors).
