During my time at university I have occupied different roles that developed my communication and leadership skills. I have served as a Head Subwarden and Student Front Desk Assistant coordinator at Kopano residence where I led teams of 5 and 15 respectively in a residence of 367 students. These roles aided in my ability to be a team player and made me comfortable with my interpersonal and communication abilities. During the 2019 academic year, as I progress through my final year thesis project, I have developed self-motivation and an eye for detail. I believe that knowledge is best attained through experiences which makes me always eager to learn through doing and from other people around me. Having studied actuarial science at UCT I have gained a lot of exposure to financial markets and the investment world how it works and where actuaries fit into everything. I have done an internship at one of the biggest investment managers in South Africa, Allan Gray. Even though my role was more from an actuarial position I had the opportunity to actively engage with members of the investment team. Part of the reason why I want to go into investments rather than pursue the traditional actuarial route is because I think banking and investments are core concepts that are going to be key in the development of the South African economy. Recently there was the collapse of the VBS bank which led to people having less faith in the banking system as a whole. What drives me is the realization that financial education in our general population is lacking which leads to the continuous loop of generational poverty even on people who have the financial ability to escape from that. A graduate opportunity in investments will help me better understand the role that the financial sector as a whole can play in the improvement of ordinary citizens and I hope to be part of the action plan that will aim to rectify this.
