I am Hloniphile Thibogang John-Otto Phike, an actor, writer, Applied Theatre practitioner, a Rhodes University graduate and student. My identity as an artist is based on intention, exploration and collaboration, among other things. In my works, I strive for the best quality and honest representation. This was made evident in a lot of theatre productions I was involved in at the Rhodes Drama Department. I was the top student in my 3rd year electives, namely, acting and arts management, and my group’s collaborative piece called Negative Portraits in 2nd year voice was also top of the class. These pieces made me realize my strengths in collaboration and exploration. Within a group setting, I am not always the leader, but I focus on the facilitation of the group. The skill of facilitation allows me to let people explore their artistic ideas that would be consolidated to create a piece, which is important in working with creatives. Being an artist has enabled me to communicate effectively with people in most spheres of theatre. It has allowed me to gain knowledge that I have used in my writing, acting and facilitation. To achieve the quality I want in my projects, I have a clear intention of what I want to achieve and how to get it done. Intention is the driving force of my decisions and helps me remain sane in a chaotic situation. It also allows me to become a flexible artist because it informs my passion and focus in most projects.
