For five years Bev Mortimer worked as a freelance writer/PR, 1992- 1997, based in Johannesburg, operating mainly in the travel, business, and IT industries. Her duties encompassed the writing of news and press releases, feature articles, opinion pieces, company brochures and newsletters (including layout and design) for IT and travel companies; Editing of books. She also studied to become a tour guide to improve her travel writing and passed the exams for five South African provinces. She then took foreign visitors to on tours in those provinces and wrote articles for publication after visiting remote, unusual areas. She contributed articles to several newspapers and magazines. These included Enterprise and Portfolio (black empowerment business magazines), The Citizen, Travel News Weekly and on occasion for The Saturday Star Travel supplement In 2002 Bev Mortimer relocated to St Francis Bay, near Port Elizabeth where she started her own community newspaper, St Francis Chronicle.
