Alan has 30 years of legal experience working across various industries and in private practice in Sub-Saharan Africa and 17 years of legal and compliance experience working in a global environment. He is an admitted advocate of the High Court of South Africa, is a member of the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa and the Compliance Institute of Southern Africa. Alan is the Executive Director at Lambert Legal Consulting SA (Pty) Ltd, a legal consultancy firm specialising in protection the of personal information, compliance, corporate governance, labour law, contract law and corporate law. The firm was founded in 2012. Alan started his career in the liquor industry doing credit management and in-house legal advising at Distell. After Distell, Alan joined Telkom where he was appointed as Regional Manager, Legal and Credit for the North Eastern Region (Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga). During his time at Telkom he set up credit management policies and structures that were implemented country wide and was head of the regional legal services. He continued his legal and credit management career with Avis Rent-a-Car Southern Africa, as the Group Receivables Manager. After a highly successful time at Avis Alan decided on moving into private practice and set up Professional Legal Solutions, a legal consultancy aimed at legal and compliance of small and medium enterprises and well as family law. It was while Alan was practicing on his own that he was approached and employed by Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa Limited. Munich Re, Africa is part of the Munich Re Group, the largest reinsurer globally. During his time at Munich Re, Alan set up both the legal department and the compliance function. In 2017 the Munich Re, Africa compliance function was rated as an “example of best practice” within the entire Munich Re Group. As Head of Legal and Compliance, Alan was responsible for legal and compliance in sub-Saharan Africa and in this role, he built trusted relationships with legal and compliance teams in Europe, North America and Australia. He managed the implementation of the Munich Re Global Compliance program in sub-Saharan Africa, provided strategic guidance and advice on compliance issues and conducted compliance related training programs. He was involved in building and implementing compliance programs for various subject areas which included combatting of financial, protection of personal information, competition, ethical walls, code of conduct, fitness and propriety, outsourcing, corporate governance, employment and black economic empowerment. Alan was appointed Regional Data Protection Officer of Munich Re for Africa in 2006 (“Information Officer”). He has since attended annual data protection meeting in Europe and North America, has chaired the South African Insurance Associations’ Protection of Personal Information (“POPIA”) Workgroup, appeared in front of the parliamentary portfolio committee dealing with POPIA and was nominated to become a member of the Information Regulator. Alan has done POPIA training and consulting for the South African Insurance Association, the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa, University of Cape Town, a large number of large corporations and many public workshops. He is an acknowledged expert when it comes to the POPIA and has previously been a judge at the annual African Legal Awards. Alan holds bachelor’s degrees in the arts and law from the University of the Witwatersrand, and post-graduate diplomas in labour law, contract law and corporate law from the University of Johannesburg.
